How To Protect Your Boat Gauges? Screen Protectors Protect Your Boat Engine Gauges.
Last year I had my boat completely rewired and as part of the work I had the boat’s Yamaha engine gauges replaced. They were in pretty bad cosmetic condition. The lenses were scratched, a little cloudy and had some yellowing. They were bad enough so that I had a difficult time reading them.
I think the prior owner of the boat may have used a brush on them when he washed the boat. One thing you should NOT do is use a brush on your gauges’ lenses OR on your windshield if you have one. If you do you will likely find that they will have scratches on them.
Like most people I have a cell phone and it has a screen protector on it that works very well at protecting the glass screen of the cell phone. They make screen protectors for larger applications like iPads and other screen readers.
I thought why not try something like that for my new gauges? Why wouldn’t screen protectors protect your boat engine gauges? I wanted something like what I have for the cell phone that did not involve any glues. And I thought if it worked for protecting the gauges from scratches, it might also provide some UV protection.
I went to RadioShack on Frontbeach Road and found a screen protector that was meant for larger screens. The one I purchased was the WriteRight® Universal Tablet Screen Protector. The packet includes two 9.5″ x 6.5″ screen protector sheets. The sheets have grids on them that make cutting them to size easier.
I got some tracing paper and traced the face of the gauge. Then I cut it out and traced it on to a heavier less flexible piece of heavier paper. I then cut it to size and trimmed it to match the face of the gauge or lens. Once that was right I used that template and traced it on to the lens protector material. Then just cut it out, trim as required by laying it over the gauge lens surface to see how it fits. Once you have it right just peel off the backing and apply as the package instructs. It goes on easily and stays on well. If you need to remove it that is easy as well.
I have had my two engine gauges protected for more than one year and so far they have worked just GREAT! 😎
I had a Hibiscus By The Bay owner asked me what I use to to protect my fishfinder and chartplotter. The screen on the chartplotter, fishfinder that came with the boat when I bought it was in such bad condition that I could barely read it when sitting dead in the water and was unreadable when under way and making way. The problem was a combination of scratches and the anti-reflective coating was degrading on the screen. The latter issue maybe from exposure to the sun.
After getting my new fishfinder, chartplotter I thought I’d try and protect it. Putting a screen protector on it makes the screen a lot easier to clean off and not worry about scratching the screen. The screen protector seems to reduce the glare and for me it makes the screen easier to read as well.
I have had the screen protectors on the fishfinder, chartplotter for 2 years and it still is working great. 🙂 I am pretty happy with how the screen protectors protect your boat engine gauges and fishfinder, chartplotter screens.
The place I bought my fish finder, chartplotter screen protector is an outfit on eBay.com called ScreenPatronus. They have a large selection and if they don’t have one to fit your fishfinder or chartplotter I am pretty sure they will custom make one for you.
