Learn what lures are catching October Redfish-Speckled Trout in St. Andrews Bay
The October bite was REALLY good! I had most of my success using topwater lures and some suspending/twitch bait lures. I did not fish with any live baits or cut baits for trout and redfish in October.
The topwater lures that were producing results for me are:
- Unfair Lures Dawgwalker 110, number 08 in pearl olive with a red head
- Paul Brown’s Lures, Fatboy Floater, Floating Original, Suspending Twitchbait and Original Suspending Twitchbait
- Rapala Saltwater Skitter Walk in the Speckled Trout color and Shad Translucent color
In the following photos you can see some of the lures in the mouths of the fish. The trout have really been liking that pink colored Paul Brown lure lately.
I was able to catch fish on topwater lures any time of the day during October. That may be a result of the waters still being kinda dirty. The best results were early morning and late afternoon and all day on days where it was cloudy.
I also fished some soft plastics mostly Z-man’s rigged weedless on 2/0 and 3/0 swim bait weighted hooks. My neighbor Shawn Smith gave me a weighted hook to try that he has had good luck with. I have yet to fish with it. He suggested rigging it according to the instruction in the vido below. Be sure to check out the loop knot he ties. Much more simple that the one I had been tying. My neighbor Bill Allen told me about this knot awhile back and I just happened to see it is in this video as well.
In October I lost several lures to big fish and twice missed hook sets on redfish wear I made what I think were perfect casts to where the fish were feeding in the grass. My friend Bill Allen taught me to look right in the grass when the tide is right and that is how I located those fish. The redfish ate the bait but when I tried to set the hook it just pulled free. The fish were deep in the grass and line was as well so maybe the grass somehow prevented me from getting the hook set. I don’t know. ‘Course could have been operator error as well. 😉 Might have to ask Bill about that. 🙂

I hope you can get out this month to do some fishing…
Have a GREAT day!
